CMS ATHLETICS

The Joint CMS Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation Program is comprised of student-athletes from Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps Colleges and offers a comprehensive program of regular physical education, intramural, recreational, club, and varsity sports. CMS varsity teams compete in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), as a member of NCAA Division III. The Program is comprised is 21 varsity sports (10 men’s, 11 women’s) and supports a student population of over 3,200 and a student-athlete population of approximately 530. CMS SOFTBALL

The Athenas have a rich history of success on the field, having won eight SCIAC regular season championships and five SCIAC Postseason Tournament titles, including a regular season co-champion in 2024. In addition, the Athenas have made numerous appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including reaching the NCAA Super Regionals in 2014 and serving as a regional host in 2019. The Athenas have won 30 or more games eight times since 2010, and reached the 20-win plateau in SCIAC games five times in that span, including 24-4 in both 2016 and 2019. In the classroom, the Athenas have earned Easton All-America Scholar honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for having grade point averages of 3.5 or higher each year, and half the team regularly earns all SCIAC All-Academic Team recognition.??

Approximate Salary Range: $17-17.50 PER HOUR

BASIC FUNCTION

This position is responsible for assisting the Head Softball Coach in all facets of the program, including but not limited to: organizing and conducting team training and practices, recruiting, team travel logistics, scholar-athlete development, and compliance with all applicable rules and regulations. Additional administrative responsibilities as assigned by the Head Coach. This position will also assist the Sport Operations Department, primarily while out of season.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the role of athletics in the liberal arts college curriculum and the integration of the student-athlete and coaching staff into the overall educational experience offered at The Colleges.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Coaching (67%): - Reporting to the Head Softball Coach, the assistant coach works both independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities: - Assist head coach with developing and implementing training and instruction for practices and competitions. - Provide assistance with all administrative aspects of the sports program. This includes but is not limited to: prompt completion of all administrative paperwork, team travel logistics, creation of practice plans, scholar-athlete and team development, and collaboration with CMS athletics staff in the areas of sports medicine, business operation, compliance, equipment, facilities, and events. - Recruit and retain academically qualified student-athletes to the highly selective liberal arts institutions of Claremont McKenna and Harvey Mudd Colleges. - Represent CMS Athletic Department and the Softball program in a positive manner within the SCIAC as well as regionally and nationally.

Athletic Department or Campus Operations (33%): - Work closely with the Sport Operations team to assist with Games Management, primarily during the off-season - Assist with facility operations, including lining fields, setup and takedown of arena bleachers, carpeting - Ensure efficient operation of all competitive contests for participants, officials, visiting institutions, and fans - Occasionally serve as the lead admin for Games Management, supervising student workers and ensuring a smooth gameday experience - Perform any other duties deemed necessary for the functioning and success of the Athletic Facilities and Sport Operations - Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

EDUCATION: A Bachelor’s degree is required or equivalent in work experience.

EXPERIENCE: Previous collegiate participation and coaching is preferred. Experience in recruitment of academically focused scholar-athletes is preferred.

LICENSES: A valid driver’s license is required.

GROOMING AND APPEARANCE: The Claremont Colleges seek to maintain a neat and professional image at all times.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

- Deploy professional skills, in collaboration with colleagues, to best promote the College’s strategic interests. - An evident understanding of the role of athletics in the liberal arts college environment is necessary along with proven experience in recruiting student-athletes to highly selective institutions. - Strong administrative, interpersonal skills, and computer/technology skills. - Appropriate certifications in First Aid, CPR, AED, or willingness to complete certifications upon hire. - Operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and associated professional software (such as Internet research, and menu-driven databases). Demonstrate understanding of the use of equipment in assessing and improving department systems and processes to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality. - Demonstrate effective, accurate, and clear communication with excellent/strong verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, phone, and customer service skills. Follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of duties. - Use strong organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and keen attention to detail.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Student Workers.

REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full-time position will vary, with the flexibility to set work hours appropriate to the needs of the program. Holiday, weekend, and evening work hours will be required. Travel will be required. Regular hours may vary due to the needs of the College or division. This is an 11-month position; the month off should be either June or July.

CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS: This is a regular, full-time, 11-month, non-exempt, benefits-eligible position.
