Originally a light novel, "Moi, quand je le réincarne en Slime" is a Japanese manga and anime adaptation. Created by author Fuse and illustrator Mitz Vah, it was picked up by publisher Kondansha for its Monthly Shonen Sirius magazine in 2015. Set in a fantasy world, the story is about Satoru Mikami, who is reincarnated as a pile of slime...

From the all-too-real world to pure fantasy

The introduction to the story couldn't be clearer. We begin with the main character, Satoru Mikami, who presents himself as a simple office worker, with no passions and, above all, no girlfriend...

When he meets his younger brother, who has come to introduce him to his girlfriend, they find themselves in the path of a dangerous madman with a knife. Satoru manages to save his brother and his girlfriend... but is fatally stabbed in the back.

The story begins with the death of the hero... but the title is "reincarnated", so we're bound to follow Satoru's next life: he finds himself in a kind of parallel universe in the form of a ball of slime. Guided by a strange voice, he discovers his new abilities, including the ability to digest objects and acquire their characteristics.

This power, known as "predator", enables him to free a dragon he meets, Veldra the Storm Dragon, imprisoned for destroying a village three centuries earlier. The dragon gives him his name, Rimuru.

Rimuru finds himself embroiled in power struggles in this completely fanciful parallel world, as his actions have created a power vacuum. Rimuru becomes the leader of the Jura Forest, and as he grows in power, neighbouring kingdoms take an interest in him, for good or ill. He will be helped in particular by Milim, a dragonoid demon who appears mainly in the form of an impertinent, immature... but devilishly intelligent young teenager.

Over the course of his encounters, Rimuru absorbs certain enemies and changes his new human appearance: from that of a 6-year-old child, he literally grows until he reaches the size and appearance of a 15-year-old, like Milim.

An accidental success?

The author, Fuse, started his story by accident. He simply wanted to practise his writing skills and posted the chapters of his novel on a website called Shosetsuka ni Naro.

In reality, he had no structural plan. He just imagined a character of no great stature receiving a new life in a fantastic universe, and carrying out one action after another: freeing a dragon, acquiring powers... It was only more or less by accident that this character ended up building a kingdom.

Given the success of Mikami/Rimuru's adventures, the novel was published and a sequel commissioned. Only then did Fuse find a theme for his story: Do what you can for today. What's more, the story revolves very much around the theme of friendship and sacrifice, as is often the case with Shonen manga.

In fact, the very beginning of the story presents this theme: Mikami sacrifices herself to protect her brother. And this spirit of friendship and sacrifice will be both the strength and weakness of Rimuru, his slime version. He tends to overreact when his friends are in danger, and doesn't hesitate to put himself in danger to help them. In fact, his first action as a slime was to free a huge dragon he had just met, without really wondering why it was locked up.

Tensura, the short title

The official French title is "Moi, quand je me réincarne en Slime". In English the title is: That time I got reincarnated in slime.

In Japanese, the title is Tensei sh*tara Suraimy datta ken, shortened to "Tensura". The original title should be translated as "That time I got reincarnated in slime".

For French-speaking audiences, the title containing the word "moi" is more meaningful, as it is more identification-oriented. Young teenagers and adults who are fans of the series can identify with the basic character, who leads a completely monotonous life, and through sacrifice he can experience completely crazy fantastic adventures, while constantly gaining in power and strength.
