There’s plenty of hot air in climate debate (2024)

On June 22, a contributor presented us with an opinion piece on “global warming.” In it she stated: “Floods, droughts, forest fires, melting glaciers, melting permafrost and wild temperature swings are all happening right now.” Let’s examine these claims using US Government and IPCC Data:

— Droughts and Floods — There is no change in the occurrence or severity of floods or droughts. The only increase is the number of unsupported claims around floods and droughts. Proxy data shows that droughts were actually much longer and worse in North America prior to 1000 AD, which accounts for the extinction of the Anasazi peoples.

— Forest Fires — Official US NFS data shows that burn acreage today is only 25% what it was 100 years ago. The only increase in the last 50 years is due to the Clinton Administration’s prohibition against clearing underbrush in national forests, which increased burn acreage slightly from its low in 1990.

— Melting Glaciers — The largest glacier in Greenland (Jacobshavin) has been growing for the last eight years. Greenland has been gaining ice mass for even longer. But, can you explain the Viking artifacts found underneath receding glaciers covering land “never seen by man before”? Why are they finding pine forests frozen under the few receding glaciers in the Alps, along with cave entrances used during WW-1? Wild Temperature Swings: There is no evidence to support this claim.

Last week’s “record heat wave” resulted in only two weather stations (of 1,218 in the U.S.) experiencing a record high temperature.

The writer continued: “Scientists predict that if we do not change drastically right now we will see conditions that make it impossible to maintain our civilization.”

Yes, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez predicted the end of the earth by 2030. Better hurry.

Please tell us which “scientist” said that, and by whom they are funded.

Perhaps the writer can cite actual scientific evidence to support the claim of a civilization-ending “warm shift.”

On the contrary, the “cold shift” from the Medieval Warming period to the Little Ice Age killed millions in Northern Europe and did major damage to civilization there. Vikings had successful colonies in Greenland growing crops and livestock for 350 years, but were killed off by the cold shift. It would seem the writer’s logic is backward. The Medieval Warm Period was much warmer than today, featuring no ice in the Arctic. This is why the Vikings were able to travel to North America without freezing to death.

Before that (4000 BC) it was so warm that forests grew right up to the Arctic Ocean. Can you explain how humans and polar bears survived the warmer temperatures you now say are so deadly?

The diatribe continues: “One of our biggest problems is that corporations have been given the same status as human beings. The corporations don’t care if people starve or have homes. Perhaps the writer can explain why the greatest environmental damage done to planet Earth was done under the socialist economies of Eastern Europe and the USSR where there were no corporations – only caring, dedicated socialists.

Perhaps she can also explain how the mega-corporations that pollute our planet with Wind and Solar farms, spewing mega-tons of pollution and CO2 in the process, and soaking up trillions of dollars in taxpayer provided subsidies, are somehow more humanitarian than the corporations she disparages. Now a little bit about storm severity. According to US and IPCC data, over the last 50 years of “exploding CO2”, there has been absolutely no change in the severity or frequency of Tropical Storms and Hurricanes. In the last 50 years the trend in tornado frequency and strength is actually downward with the worst year being 1974 when a “global cooling crisis” was proclaimed by “climate experts.”

So, why are storms no stronger? Hint: Warming occurs at the higher latitudes, never at tropical latitudes (Wm. Lindzen, MIT). This reduces the temperature differential between colliding air masses, hence reducing the transfer of energy between air masses (aka storm intensity). It doesn’t matter if an air mass contains more energy if it does not have an energy sink to dump to.

Thermodynamics is fascinating, no? BTW, temperature records show that the Earth has been warming over the last 300 years coming out of the little ice age with no discernible jump due to CO2. No wonder that Michael Mann had to create that fraudulent hockey stick to get people to believe the climate catastrophe narrative.

Did you read the Climate Gate emails? Finally, the writer advocates “global cooperation”. Perhaps she can provide a roadmap for cooperation when: (1) China builds 2 new coal-fired plants per week with no end in sight, and (2) India plans a 60% increase in coal use by 2030. Your plan?
